Post Partum Doula

WHAT IS A POST PARTUM DOULA?

WHY WOULD I NEED ONE?

HOW WOULD IT BENEFIT ME, MY BABY AND MY FAMILY?

I’m so glad you asked.

With so much focus on your pregnancy and birth for the last 9 months, in my experience that is where the focus on you, as the expectant mother, ends.

A baby is born, a mother is born and this is a time of BIG changes for the whole family.

A time that some families really struggle to adjust to .

A time that NEEDS focus and attention.

There is a lot going on for the family and it is totally understandable that some of us may have difficulty adjusting.

There are a lot of wondrous things happening

PHYSICALLY

EMOTIONALLY

SPIRITUALLY

MENTALLY

This is where your POST PARTUM DOULA comes in.

A POSTPARTUM DOULA PROVIDES support to a mother, that in turn ripples to her baby and the whole family unit.

The type of support offered by a post partum doula is varied according to her experience and areas of specialty and may include:

Settling/breastfeeding mentoring

Sharing / debriefing birth stories

Household management

Care of siblings (or the co-ordination of care of siblings)

Managing visitors

Coordinating appointments/paperwork

Online grocery shopping and nutritious healing meal plans

Providing relevant resources

Reassurance, encouragement, guidance

This will vary day-to-day and family to family

Some post partum doulas specialise in particular areas, such as household or meal planning.

BENEFITS OF A POST PARTUM DOULA

In my experience when the mother of a newborn is provided with the opportunity to be surrounded by a “village” of support and encouragement it enables her to heal and recover from the birth, bond with her baby, establish breastfeeding, connect with older children and partner as well as to rest, focus on self care and enjoy this very special time.

When all of these things are in harmony there is a ripple effect on to the whole family so that all may have a joyful experience.

WHY WOULD SOMEONE NEED A DOULA?

Many of us may find ourselves with little or no family support during the early days / months after birth for whatever reason. This can lead to feelings of loneliness, overwhelm, exhaustion and isolation. The family support we have might be inadequate and we may not feel like sharing our struggles with family due to judgements and expectations.

A POST PARTUM DOULA can assist in maintaining connection, provide resources as well as be there to listen to any concerns so as to avoid these feelings. They are experts in providing you with non-judgemental and experienced emotional mentoring to navigate the profound changes you are experiencing.

I do this work because I know from first hand experience that when you use internal as well as external resources to set up your village, it helps to prevent poor mental health, the disintegration of relationships and a more harmonious nest for your baby.

This postpartum time can be BLISS when the right support is provided. Imagine having access to someone for a series of visits, someone who nourishes you with understanding, helps you plan delicious meals for the days, weeks and months ahead, keys you in with significant and relevant support networks and creates a plan for your schedule that actually factors in some self-care time for you. If you know someone who needs this kind of support, this can also be a perfect gift for a loved one. Or give the gift of support to yourself. In the long run, it will help you to blossom into the incredible mother you are destined to become.
