Significance of Doula
A doula
• Recognizes birth as a key life experience “rite of passage” the birth giver will remember all their life
• Understands the physiology of birth and the emotional needs of a woman in labour
• Assists the birth giver and their partner in preparing for and carryingout their plans for birth
• Supports the birthing woman/couple to access information they need to make conscious choices
• Holds space for the labouring mother throughout the entire labour
• Provides emotional support, physical comfort measures, an objective view and spiritual connection
• Facilitates communication between the labouring mother, her partner and clinical care providers
• Encourages the birth givers partner to participate at their comfort level
• Perceives the role as one who nurtures and protects the birthing mother’s memory of their birth

-Birth preferences as set out by you CREATE A BIRTH MAP
Use of RIBOZO/BIRTH SLING/ TENS MACHINE
-On call 24hrs/day 2 weeks prior and 2 weeks after your estimated due date.
-Attend birth from time my presence is requested and throughout until you are settled and comfortable
-Support emotional, physical and spiritual for you and your partner throughout
-Create and hold a safe and beautiful birth space-
-Advocate for you
-Home visit / birth debrief 1-2 weeks after birth
